MUSIC SIN FRONTERAS 5.5.24 – IndiePulse Music Journal

A live performance cancelled, one other left after the primary set (the music was good, however the meals…), and a live performance by mariachi faculty children gained the day

A wierd musical  weekend however the children saved it

This weekend has been a form of a protracted unusual musical journey, I used to be planning protecting a live performance by Arablab, a  venture of Arabic music with experimental, fusion, and psychedelic cross border music.  It was on the state-run CCAR auditorium, so I knew the seats can be comfy and the sound good. That was Saturday evening, so for Friday I made a decision to catch Frad at a neighborhood restaurant venue – 150 seats with room for dancing.  I might  rock out and have dinner.

Frad was nice. Onerous rock covers together with her specific and pleasant twist. Her guitar participant husband blew everybody away and the band was excellent. However the restaurant’s  meals menu had been reduce to a few entrées – none of which I preferred, and the waiter took 45 minutes to ask if we needed meals. We determined to depart after the primary set and eat elsewhere. We missed some music, however our tummies had been blissful.

And I nonetheless had Arablab to cowl Saturday evening for Music Sin Fronteras.

Sadly, Arablab canceled. Undecided why, however I think low ticket gross sales had been not less than partly guilty. Arab music is an acquired style for westerners, and apparently it’s for Mexicans too.

That left me with a Mariachi Actual Ajijic live performance Sunday in celebration of Cinco de Mayo –  not an enormous day in Mexico, however a superb excuse for a mariachi live performance. I really like MRA  –  they’re one of many high mariachis in Jalisco, the birthplace of mariachi. However I had coated them earlier than, so it was dicey as a writing subject until they shocked me. They did – or moderately the opening act did.

The opening act was a protracted set by the scholars from the Pedro Ryes Faculty of Mariachi.  I knew the varsity, having coated the set up of its first piano final 12 months, and from  figuring out the director, Danny Medeles. However the faculty, named after a well-known mariachi participant from the world,  had existence for less than two years, and was coaching children below 18, some as younger as 9 years outdated who had ever touched a musical instrument or sang earlier than.

I knew there was potential, however I didn’t anticipate a lot in that brief time and was not preserving monitor of the varsity. I went as a result of the headline act was Mariachi Actual Ajijic, considered one of Jalisco’s finest and associates of mine. I understood that the afternoon live performance was a fundraiser for the varsity, which was nice.

Boy was I fallacious! They had been so good they obtained two standing ovations. And so they introduced that that they had been chosen as finalists within the Worldwide Mariachi Faculty competitors in Mexico Metropolis and had been chosen to present the opening live performance. I additionally realized that the woman college students had earlier carried out on the Gala de La Mujer Mariachi,  and the varsity participated within the very selective  La Estrella Infantil in Guadalajara’s Plaza de Mariachis.

Not dangerous for a bunch of children who had solely two years of instruction in music.

They entertained us for over an hour with full band songs and solos and a few astonishing singing. I used to be particularly impressed with 13-year outdated Amanda Enciso Jacobo,  With a voice that might shatter a tequila snifter and the stage presence of a cultured star, she captivated me and remainder of  the viewers  of 250 or so.  In actual fact, the entire soloists and the complete band had the expertise and stage confidence of skilled entertainers twice or thrice their ages.

Mariachi Actual Ajijic

The afternoon ended with a foot-stomping blow the roof off efficiency by the venerable Mariachi Actual Ajijic, together with “Flight of the Bumble Bee” and a rendition of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” that had everybody within the viewers singing alongside. All in all, a fairly good ending to a weekend that began off as a protracted unusual musical journey.
