Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Lydia studied music at Mount Allison College, and went on to the Royal School of Music and the Nationwide Opera Studio in London, England. She led the Amadeus Choir of Higher Toronto as its conductor for 35 years.
She was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2023.
